One thing we ask to our candidates is to solve a little riddle (a few difficulty levels) to know how they can work.
We don’t ask for a specific language. Pseudo language is good.
What we want to know is if there’s is a problem, people must be able to solve it. Then using all the help they need, but one thing is not knowing the syntax of a command, another is not to know what a tree is and what is it for.
I have 30 years long experience in more than 40 languages starting from embedded to high level problems. I search sometimes for some algorithms because remembering everything is just impossible, but I can write a new algorithm from scratch to fit the request of my client.
At the end I must be able to write it in C, Python, C#, assembly (many processors), Lua, Perl, Ocaml, F#, Ladder, Java, Javascript, Reason (ok, this is Ocaml), or any other and if required even in PHP (I prefer not)
But knowing a language does not mean being a programmer like knowing English or French or Dutch does not make you able to write poetry or books in those languages.
